Beginning in the early eighties in Kingston Jamaica, dancehall music arose as a response to the dominance of conscious reggae. Initially, it was marked by MCs toasting on top of instrumental tracks, rapidly changing into a unique blend of electronic sounds, infectious beats, and often raw lyrics.
